Points of interest

The Carpenter Inn and Conference Center is located in historic Meigs County, Ohio.  The county was settled in 1796, and named for Governor Jonathan Meigs, Jr.  It is the site of the oldest county courthouse in the state of Ohio, in Chester.

The Battle of Buffington Island was fought near Portland in 1863.  This area is also the site of a prehistoric Indian mound.  Fifty-seven miles of the Ohio River front form the county's eastern boundary.  Meigs County is widely known for its deer hunting, as well as turkey, grouse and other small game.  The Ohio River and its tributaries offer a variety of fish including sauger, striped bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie and large and smallmouth bass.

Points of interest in close proximity to the Carpenter Inn include Athens, home of Ohio University; the Dairy Barn Cultural Arts Center, home of Quilt National, The Kennedy Museum; The Nelsonville Scenic Railway; Lakes Snowden, Hope, Dow and Burr Oak; the Wahkeena Nature Reserve; the Wayne National Forest, the Hocking Hills and historic Pomeroy on the Ohio River.

Founders

My husband and I bought the farm in 1992 and knew right away that it was meant to be shared.  It's such a beautiful place it only seemed natural and right!  We have been working full time to renovate and build a very special conference center and retreat since then.  We wanted to create a healing place, far from the city traffic and jangling phones: a place that rejuvenates and restores.  Our guests say that they feel as if they have entered a different world the moment they turn into our drive.  Our dream has always been to build a healthy community where people have control over their own lives.

I love this place.  I don't get bored and especially enjoy learning how to do new things like landscaping and building -- every task around here could be a lifetime vocation!  It's exciting never knowing who will walk through the door and so rewarding to befriend our guests.  We look forward to welcoming you.

Carpenter Inn is deep in the country, but easy to find.
